We received a call from a couple driving down a local road, mentioning that a Doberman was laying in a ditch about two blocks from our location. We were immediately concerned that the dog could be one of our rescue dogs and knowing how busy animal control is, we headed out to help. The dog was clearly in terrible pain, with a badly broken leg and road rash all over her body. She wasn't one of ours but she did have a microchip which was registered to a woman living 1 1/2 hours away, who claimed - when we contacted her - that she gave the dog away over a year ago because her infant son was allergic to her. The new owner was a Facebook friend of her stepson, she said. This party was unreachable and we may never know how "Daisy" ended up in our neighborhood. Since the microchip was registered to the original owner, Daisy was willingly relinquished to us. The woman confirmed what we already knew: Daisy is a sweet, gentle 3-year-old girl who is a wonderful dog that didn't deserve the horror that happened to her.
Daisy was promptly taken to our surgical veterinary hospital for x-rays and orthopedic assessment. This revealed that her leg was broken in six places and couldn't be saved, so we left her there to recover enough strength and freedom from pain that she could support herself using one back instead of two. Daisy had her amputation on October 7 and her spay surgery was a few weeks later so she is now ready for a loving home. Daisy is good with other dogs, loves all people (though she sometimes needs a minute to fully warm up) and she’s a pretty easy keeper. She is navigating life on 3 legs quite well and still loves going for walks. Daisy does like to chase cats so she probably isn’t the best choice for a home with kitties.
